McKeown, Wendolyn Ruth (née Rozon)
April 19, 1947 – April 23, 2020

It is with a sense of profound sadness the family of Wendy McKeown announce her passing at the age of 73. Wendy died after contracting the Covid 19 virus after a shockingly quick emergence and progression of this terrible disease.

Wendy is survived by her son Brent (Charlaine) and daughter Heather (Dan) and her four grandchildren Cooper, Mason, Sara and Sam, who were the great joys of her later years. Her sister Joan (Tommy), brother Arnie (Barb) and dear friends Janis Ladds and Roz Dickey join us in our deep mourning. She was predeceased by her husband Bill McKeown, her parents Albert and Hazel Rozon and her brothers Jim (Carol) and George (Gloria).

Wendy was born in Quebec and spent most of the first part of her life in Deux- Montagnes, just outside of Montreal, before moving to Edmonton which has been her home for over 50 years. While raising her busy family, Wendy was always a part of the work force and held a number of positions through the years and all gave her various levels of joy, largely due to the wonderful friendships she developed in each space. Of particular note would be her time spent at the Edmonton Journal, and her many years as an usher at Northlands Coliseum (Rexall Place) which, as a die-hard OIler fan, gave her immense joy and happiness. While she loved all the Oilers, her favorite players were Wayne Gretzky, Kevin Lowe and B.J. MacDonald. Ultimately, Wendy will be remembered for her kindness and her abiding commitment to her friendships. She felt and loved deeply. Perhaps the saddest part of these past few weeks and too sudden end, was the fact that we did not get to say goodbye. Our hope is that in those final hours mom was able to rest easy knowing that she was always loved. Of all the gifts that she gave us, this is the most profound: there was never a moment in our lives when we did not feel our mother’s love. That gave us the foundation upon which we built every good thing in our life. Her passing leaves a void, but we will continue to build on her love with each day as we always have.

Our family would like to extend our thanks to the staff of Kensington Shepherd’s Care and The St. Albert Retirement Residence for their kindness and compassion in caring for our mom in her later years. We also wish to extend thanks to the many doctors and nurses throughout the Edmonton region who have supported our mom’s mental and physical health through the years, including in her final struggle. You are all true heroes. We deeply appreciate the kindness and compassion shown by Dr. Hansen and his team at the Royal Alexandra Hospital who cared for mom in her final hours.

There will be no service at present given our current circumstances and we will give thought to next steps once this global crisis has passed. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation to any of the numerous charities supporting our most vulnerable members of society, including our first-responders at this unprecedented time in human history.

April 16, 1940 – April 28, 2020

With a sad and heavy heart, we announce the passing of our loving and cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather – José Afonso.

Left to cherish his memory are: Maria Beatriz, his loving wife of 56 years, son Helder (Nela), daughter Maria de Fatima (Adan), grandchildren Alyssa, Andy (Marina), Chrissy (Andrew), Janine (Marek), delightful great granddaughter Nova, three sisters, one brother, and numerous relatives and friends.

Born in Cortes do Meio, at the base of the Serra da Estrela, the highest point in mainland Portugal, José is the second eldest of six siblings. José was conscripted to the Army in 1960 and was stationed in Angola. Ending his tour of duty, he returned home to marry Maria Beatriz in 1964. The family emigrated to Edmonton on January 19, 1968. Having been a Mill Operator in the textile industry, he adapted to life in Edmonton and worked in the Meat Packing industry until his retirement.

José loved his family dearly. He was often the ringleader as his grandchildren mimicked his dance moves and antics. He loved parties and music and was often overheard singing and whistling his favorite tunes. José was the family’s exuberant cheerleader. The beautiful landscape and hot springs of Banff and Jasper brought him much joy and he spent numerous long weekends with his family and friends camping in the mountain parks. Although his cognitive memory declined over the last few years, deep down we know that the love and compassion that he exemplified remained within him. Our treasured memories of him will endure. Rest in Peace Zé.

Prayers and Funeral Mass will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Portuguese Parish.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations my be forwarded to St. Michael’s Seniors Health Group or Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta.

Don Becker

On April 22, 2020, we said goodbye to Don Becker, a man of character, strength & determination. Seven years ago, Don was diagnosed with metastatic thyroid cancer and over the years, he had to adapt to losing many of the things he loved – work, golf, travel, playing guitar and working on his acreage. Fortunately, he painted until the end and his watercolours will hang in many homes for years to come.

Although his life ended too soon, Don had many good things in his life, beginning with being born on December 31, 1958 into a steady, active and fun family with siblings that had each other’s backs when it was needed the most. Don was a fast and skilled hockey player and the family spent a lot of time at the rink. In university, he met, fell in love with and had long and happy partnership with Cheryl. They had many adventures together, not the least of which was having two terrific kids who kept life amazing, interesting and meaningful. Don worked for several architectural firms, ending his career as a Senior Associate in the architectural department at Stantec. He used his passion for design to build his own home in the country which became the gathering place for many family dinners and events which only became more joyful after the addition of grandkids Riley and Reese.

Don is predeceased by his Dad, Bob Becker who loved family gatherings big or small, mom-in-law Joanne Grant who was a mentor and father-in-law Roy Cucheran, who also loved to build and gather with family.

Don leaves behind his village of beloved: wife Cheryl; son Sam & Lana; daughter Nicky, Brent, Riley & Reese; mom Margaret; sister Barb, and nephews Sandy (Tiffany) & Connor (Jordyn); brother Doug, niece Sarah (Mike & Abigail), nephew Curtis; brother Brian; and cousin Rob (Michelle). This family came together in good times and in bad. Cheryl would like to thank her family, Kim, Rick, Rob, Hannah, Lance, Arren and her niece and nephews for their love and support.

There are many people who have touched Don’s life including his friends, particularly Marcel Jakob, Dave Redekopp and Ken Schmuland.

Don believed: work hard, always do your best, celebrate the good things in life, and make the world a little better than how you found it.

For those who wish to make a donation, please consider making a donation to the Leduc Food Bank in his name.

Although Eunice was not the most talented singer, it never stopped her from sharing her favourite gospels with everyone around. Her wonderful sense of humour and uplifting spirit stayed with her until the very end.
